Hey loves! We’ve been getting a lot of requests for Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) and we looked around and found Ugandan Castor Oil which has the same properties and is friendlier on your pocket! 🙂
Black Castor Oil is obtained by first roasting the castor bean resulting in a dark color and burnt smell from the ash of the roasted castor beans. Yellow Castor Oil is obtained by cold pressing the castor bean.
Black Castor Oil may have become popularised by the Jamaican brands but the process for obtaining it has been used in Africa for years including in countries like Uganda and Zambia. Little wonder as much of the Jamaican Black population are of African or partially African descent with many being able to trace their origins to West Africa.
Both castor oils are great for hair. Their benefits include;
-Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid which is a omega 9 fatty acid and linoleic acid , an omega 6 fatty acid said to promote hair growth.
-Ricinoleic acid is also an analgesic (causes pain relief) and is an anti-inflammatory which comes in handy for itchy scalp days.
-Castor oil has anti bacterial and anti fungal properties and has been used as a food preservative and mould inhibitor. It’s use will help combat scalp infections.
-Castor oil is a humectant and will keep your hair well moisturized. It’s an excellent sealant and leaves hair with a wonderful shine.
Black Castor Oil has acquired a widespread reputation for enhancing hair growth. If your edges be struggling you should definitely give this a shot. Massage a little into your scalp in the morning and at night.
The first time I used castor oil, I used it alone as a sealant. It was difficult to apply because it’s very heavy and viscous. However my hair immediately felt and looked fuller, for those that love their afros bulky. I mix it with a small amount of a lighter oil – olive or coconut – now to ease the application process.
You can use black castor oil as a pre poo oil, as a hot oil treatment, as a sealant and to increase the shine of your hair.
